Faithat Work: Finding Purpose Beyond the Paycheck is an in-depthlook at how and why we can and should strive to live out our Christian valuesin the workplace. I really enjoyed thisbook. The personal stories, the concreteideas and suggestions at the end of each chapter as well as the reflectionquestions added to the Scripture-based reasoning for making Christ-likebehavior and a closer relationship with God and others your two main goals.

     Through quotes from the Bible, the Catechism, popes and saints, Kevin Lowryunderlines the importance of putting God at the center of our lives and givespractical advice on how we can do that even at work in ways that are sociallyacceptable and likely to open the hearts and minds of others to Christ.
     This book also resonateddeeply with me is because it often made me think of
the ways my husband has,through his strong work ethic, moral sense of responsibility, and the genuinecare and concern he has for people, been a Christ-like witness to hisco-workers. It’s kind of interestingthat what seems so natural for him has to be studied and learned byothers. I know his friendliness andcompassion for others has had a much more profound effect on his co-workersthan he even realizes.
     Several of thequestions also made me think of my supervisor at work, who is one of thekindest, calmest, gentlest, most loving people I know. I have talked with people at work about faithand passed along various religious and spiritual books I’ve read, but it wouldbe hard for me to say if I’ve been able to make a difference just by who I amand what comes naturally to me.
     I love that Lowryincludes tips and suggestions that are reasonable and help us accept thesanctifying grace that can come to us through our jobs, if we know where tolook and how to respond when we find the challenges.
    I highly recommend Faithat Work: Finding Purpose Beyond the Paycheck the book and the practice. The whole time I was reading it, I waspraying for a friend who has been really stressed out by her job lately. I think I’ll deliver this book to herdoorstep with a note of encouragement.

TV Allowed, But Only for Special Occasions

    Not too long ago, I foundmyself watching Stuart Little the based-on-the-book movie starring Hugh Laurie andGeena Davis with the two elementary school boys I was babysitting. I have to say my favorite part was watchingHugh Laurie be a sickly sweet and concerned father to a young boy and a talkingmouse. It’s been years since I read thebook by E.B. White. My mom and a numberof other people are fans of the popular TV show House, but I don’tparticularly enjoy watching Hugh Laurie play a bitter, rude, sarcastic, pompous,jerk of a doctor, brilliant though he may be.
     Now before peoplethink that I am all for kids spending hours in front of the TV instead of playinggames, reading, doing their homework, building with Legos, playing outside, and arts and crafts,let me put in my disclaimer: when I wasnannying for my two little guys, we didn’t watch TV during the 11 hour daysthat I had them.
     The only time Iturned the TV on so we could watch something was when I
brought over the DVD ofmy sister Theresa’s dance recital, so they could see the numbers she wasin. A few times I’d brought them with meto her dance classes and/or dress rehearsals, and they’d really enjoyed them,so I figured it would be fun for them to watch.
     I can stillremember driving to Theresa’s dance class one day with Jack riding in thebackseat when I told him we were going to seeTheresa dance. From a very early age hewas quite vocal, so upon hearing this, he began chanting “Teesa Dance! TeesaDance!” When I told him that it waslikely my mom would also be there to watch the class. He responded with an enthusiastic, “Trishamommy?!”which is what the boys called my mother, aka the grand-nanny.
     On the way homefrom a very lively dance class with the subsequent loud music and repetition,Jack was pretty riled up. The whole wayhome, he chanted, “Teesa dance! Teesa dance! Boom, boom, boom!” He inserted a: “Trishamommy” every once in a whilefor good measure.

     I viewed it as agood sign when the elementary school boys I was taking care of were confused whenthey got to come home from school and watch movies. One of them had a fever and needed to rest,so their mom okayed a double feature for the afternoon/evening.
     I knew this wasn’ttheir normal afterschool activity. Atone point, the youngest asked if all they were going to do while their mom wasgone was watch movies. I clarified thatthis was allowed only because one of them was sick and because their mom hadsaid it was all right. With thatreassurance, he finished his homework, practiced piano, then he joined hisbrother and me for Stuart Little 2.

Does Respect Life Ministry Mean More than Protesting Abortion?

Absolutely! Respect Life hasto do with a great deal more than just abortion. That’s one of the many issues, but it’s notby any means the only one about which people are called to care. I love the way our pastor helped bring the fullscope of respecting life to the forefront today.

He asked peoplein the congregation to stand and remain standing if they had ever…helpedsupport a woman facing an unexpected pregnancy, visited someone in prison, takenthe Protecting God’s Children Virtus Training, helped in any way with CARITAS,sponsored a child in Haiti, done outreach for the Holy Family cluster ofparishes in Appalachia, helped with the Job Assistance Ministry (JAM) at ourparish, anyone who's been involved in Christ Renews His Parish (CRHP) retreats, supported the Special Olympics or participated in anything to supportpersons with disabilities, helped immigrants who sought aid through our parish,received e-mails and taken action on legislation through Virginia Catholic Conference(VCC), visited someone who was homebound or hospitalized, helped care for a relativea who was sick or dying, comforted someone who'd lost a loved one through bereavement support…

Fr. Dan Brady’slist included a wide range of ministries, large and small acts of kindness, anddaily practices that promote and protect the dignity of human life fromconception to natural death. Themajority of the congregation was standing by the time he’d gone through all ofhis list, then he finished his message by asking everyone to stand who wouldcommit to doing something to respect life, and then he had the entirecongregation on their feet.

One of my Christ Renews His Parish CRHP sisters, Nancy had us over for a luncheon this afternoonafter 11:15am Mass. We talked about thesermon, and many mentioned that they were kind of surprised at some of thethings Fr. Dan included as being part of respecting life. Many people hadn’t considered that somethingas seemingly simple as providing an item for the bake sale to help raise moneyfor a group of Sudanese boys to attend school counts as an action that supportslife. Looking around the table, Ireminded a number of my CRHP sisters of what they’ve done that has become second-natureto them that falls under the category of Respect Life ministry.

Lord, thank Youfor the multitude of ministries and ways you’ve given us to serve those who aresuffering in mind, body, and/or spirit. Help us be even more open to the needs of those around us and the waysin which you’d like to work in and through us to meet those needs. Amen.

NothingIs Impossible with God: I wasthinking about that truth from the Bible a lot last weekend. My sister Mary was installed as a deacon atChrist Presbyterian Church. I’m notsurprised that my sister has been chosen as a ministry leader in her church,especially since she and her husband, Jordan, have long been doing the prayerin outreach in their church and neighborhood that would be customary of peoplein such a role. What’s amazing and trulymiraculous is that my sister has done more than survived, she’s thrived sinceshe joined the church’s youth group back in high school. She’s been through an awful lot in her life,and God’s turned it all into good, as only He can. Thank, You, Lord Jesus!

Who are you today? Since I substitute regularly at schoolboth for academic teachers from the toddler class up through middle school aswell as work in Montessori Enrichment, it’s not unusual for people to ask me, “Whoare you today?” I know that they mean who are you subbing for today, but that’snot what they say. I’ve gotten in thehabit of introducing myself, “I’m Trisha,” though most people know me there,then I add, “and today I’m subbing for so-and-so.” It catches people off-guard which can be fun.

The Waiting Game Lately the combinationof different substituting, babysitting, nannying, afterschool club teacher mixI juggle has kind of been up in the air. I’m doing my best to roll with it and not worry about what’s next. As of yet, I don’t have enough kids signed upto run either of my afterschool clubs, so I’m postponing the start date for onemore week to give parents more time to get their forms and fees in. I know it will all work out one way oranother, and I’m grateful to have work to do even if I’m not certain what thecombination will look like over the next few months.

I remember you! SinceI am the lead teacher for several of the different summer camps held atRichmond Montessori School, many children recognize me when I come into theirclassrooms to substitute. Some willremember my name. Others recall I’m “MissTrisha” and ask me if I remembered having them in camp. A little boy approached me while I wassubbing in his class yesterday to ask me if I remembered when he found thebeetle during Nature Camp. I did recallthat occurrence. It’s really fun to seewhat kids learn, remember, and take in. They’re such little sponges!

Respect Life Sunday Thisweekend is Respect Life Sunday at our parish. Kevin and I have had so much going on with work, family, ministrythings, that we decided that it would be better for us right now if we didn’tcommit to one more thing. I thought Imight feel tremendously guilty not helping set everything up and man the tablesas I have in previous years, but then I recalled some of the more day-to-daythings Kevin and I have done in recent months that most definitely fall underthe category of respect life, and I felt better realizing it’s become a way oflife for us, not just an occasional Sunday.

Father, It’s Been Less Than an Hour Since Your Last Confession

Sermons are as varied as the clergy who give them, but Iagree with Fr. James A. Wehner, S.T.D. (SacraeTheologiae Doctor), author of The + Evangelization + Equation= The Who, What, andHow, that the best ones contain valuablelessons in faith formation. An off-the-cuff(or the collar as it were) homily that’s more a stroll down memory lane for thepriest than a strong illustration of Scripture readings, holy days, an edifyinglook at the fundamental teachings of the Catholic Church, the lives of thesaints, or even a spiritual insight that really brought home one of Christ’steachings seems like a waste of valuable time to me.

     Ihave seen how true it is that Mass is and ought to be treated as the primarytool for faith formation. If the priestdoes little more than describe part of his childhood, maybe tell a few funnyjokes, and offers the congregation nothing more substantial that he’s doing adisservice to the assembly. The numbersof people in the pews as declined for many reasons over the years, but how dowe expect to change that if the minister serving in persona Christi doesn’tprepare a suitable sermon to feed his flock and help nurture them in the faith?
    You’re missing the mark if when given the microphone to break open theWord of God, you put little more thought, effort, study, and prayer into itthan you would a spontaneous toast at a friend’s birthday party.

     Ihave seen, experienced, and understand that some priests and deacons seem tohave an innate gift for writing and delivering beautiful sermons that helppeople connect on a deeper level with certain aspects of Scripturepassages. Others are entertainingstorytellers who are able to relate through hilarious, true anecdotes, howthey’ve struggled to live out the Gospel values in the modern world. Some take a very abstract, theologicalapproach that involves quotes and examples from the saints and apostles. I’m impressed and inspired by the priests whoin an informal, completely genuine way, discuss what the Church calls us to doand how he’s challenged by it as much as the next person. I learn something valuable from every one ofthese approaches.    I’d rather be edified, inspired, and instructed at Mass than have asinking feeling of disappointment when listening to a preacher use “prime timefor faith formation and catechesis” as a laidback, extemporaneous andcompletely unrelated stroll down memory lane.
    Listening to the Word of God and receiving the Eucharist are the twomain parts of the Mass. Why not use aprime teachable moment in between the two parts of the Liturgy to help thecongregation learn and understand more about God’s unconditional love andChrist’s Supreme Sacrifice?

Saying Goodbye, Letting Go, Letting God

Dear Sister in Christ,

I’m still notquite sure what to say. Winnie, Tom, andSambo are cuddled up on the couch watching me write this to you. It’s interesting that I’m often surprisedthat people are willing to trust me with their valuables and most prizedpossessions. In a way, I feelhonored. At other times, I feel likeshouting a huge warning that I’m not worthy to receive something that is soimportant and meaningful to someone else.

     It’s anongoing struggle within me that was brought to the surface again today. As you described the dear memories you haveof your most beloved stuffed animals, most of all Winnie-the-Pooh, but Tom andSambo, too, and that you had been giving things away in preparation forentering the religious life, I wasn’t sure what part of the process of makingpeace with the past and moving forward you had come to and wanted to share withme.
     I still feelincredibly humbled that you have felt comfortable and safe enough with me thatyou’ve shared some of your most difficult struggles, hopes, and desires, alongwith the many spiritual experiences you’ve had over the years.
     Sometimes I’m notsure of the appropriate response when given a gift that has so much sentimentalvalue to the giver. I imagine I lookedrather bewildered when you explained the significance of the three well-lovedfriends you felt led to pass on to me. Obviously, these have been very special treasures for you for a numberof years. They’ve caught your tears,been with you in good times and bad, and it is a tremendous sign that you arepreparing yourself in mind, body, and spirit to enter the religious life thatyou are ready to let them go.
     This weekend, Fr.Jim gave the homily at St. Michael’s for 5:30pm Mass, and he spoke about theEpiphany, of course. He said that we arecalled to give God the most precious gift, that which we have been holding backfrom Him. Anything or anyone that keepsus from the Lord must be sacrificed on the altar in order that we can serve Godfirst and foremost. More and more yourtreasure has been in doing the Lord’s will.
     The material possessions that brought youcomfort and held memories for you were evidence of people and circumstances inyour past, but the Truth of who you are is at your core and in God’sheart. No thing, no accomplishment, nopossession from another person could possibly embody all that is you.
     Detachment fromthings that we’ve felt we’ve needed to cling to in the past in order toremember who we were, what we’d been through, or who cares about us, is agrowing process that allows more room in our hearts for God’s love andaffection for us.
     You have done onsome level what parents do with their children, and what God has and willcontinue doing with you: you have loved what was given to you the whole time they were in your care, thenwith thought and eventually prayer you discerned who should receive yourcomforting trio. God is doing a similarwork in you. He’s loving you completely,though He knows most intimately all of your bumps, bruises, scars, insecurities,fears, and pain.
     I understand alltoo well what you mean about your tendency to dive in head-first. I have often done the same thing, and it hasled me to the same place of feeling worn-out, confused, lost, and hurt. Diving into God’s will is the onlywhole-hearted plunge we know will always bring us closer to Him.
     God knew from thetime He knit you in your mother’s womb that you would be a very passionateperson. By submitting to Him, He will beable to use that for His glory and honor, for the salvation of souls in timeand eternity.
     One thing that Ilearned and need to be reminded of is something that Danielle Rose speaks ofbeautifully in her song “The Saint that Is Just Me” is that God doesn’t want orneed for me to be someone else in order to serve Him. He wants me to be the best version of myself,the saint that only I can become.
     It has been soeasy for me at times to think that God can possibly work in and throughme. I figure that I’m too broken anddamaged for Him to use me to reachothers. That’s what the devil would mostlike for us to believe, that we are useless and worthless. Those are lies. You are not too old, too broken, too damaged,too anything that God isn’t able to do amazing things in and through you. The world may say that we should have thingsfigured out by a certain age or a certain time in our lives, but those who arewise know that discerning God’s will is a lifelong process.
     I’m remindedquite frequently that God’s timing isn’t ours, that what we think should happenor figure would be best often isn’t even close to the amazing blessings andmiracles the Lord wishes to shower upon us. He’s got some wonderful plans for your future, and when it’s imperativethat you know the details, He’ll let you in on them. In the meantime, just stay close to Christ,remain in love with the Lord, and you will be shown the way.
     It’s veryimportant to me that you know that I care deeply about you and that your trustand willingness to be vulnerable with me means a great deal.
     I’m not quitefinished processing all of this, but I want to send you what I’ve written sofar, rather than wait, to let you know that I am indeed touched by yourgift.

My comment on thispriceless post was: “Matt, thank you for alerting us to this bleachedbreach of peace and political correctness in our society. It never occurred to me how extremelydangerous our country and world has become particularly because dumb blondejokes are allowed to fly rampantly. Thissheds new highlights on everything and will certainly help us get to the rootof the problem before the rest of us become tragic victims of the blondebombshell. Somebody should alertHomeland Security immediately as to the true security risk out there. TGIF indeed!”

The Epiphanyand Total Consecration Connection: I was very excited I’d remembered to bring the remaining Total Consecration packets that had been on a bookshelf at our apartment. I invited everyone present at the CursilloEpiphany party last Friday evening to take one with them.

Afterexperiencing a deeper conversion when I first made myConsecration to Jesus through Mary while in high school, you’d think Iwould have made it a higher priority to get these powerful prayers in people’shands sooner than later, but I didn’t.

Death Row Conversions Thistrue story of conversion is absolutely amazing. I say amazing rather than unbelievable,because the Blessed Mother has had a pivotal part in my husband’s conversion aswell. Of course, Kevin’s never been ondeath row, but he definitely used to be at cross purposes with anythingCatholic.

My Patron Saint for2012. I figured I’d go ahead and use JenniferFulwiler’s Saint’s Name Generator to find out who my patron saint is for this year. I’m not all that surprised by the result: St. Joan of Arc. I find it interesting that the patron saintof France would be the one I picked for this year, considering the next sectionof the spiritual memoir for me to write is about my time in France and whatcame from that period of my life in terms of prayers, healing, and Truth. Sisters, Sisters…Sunday afternoon, thewomen I served on team with for Christ Renews His Parish, and I made the trekover the golf course and through the woods to Nora’s for a deliciouslywonderful Epiphany party. Laughter,hugs, time to catch up, delectable food, and great people made for twospectacular get-togethers this past weekend. Kevin came with me for the first one, but he opted out of the secondone.

The Virtue of Hope Theonly things I asked for this Christmas were for three books by theinspirational Christian author, Kim Meeder. I’ve finished reading all three books of hers that I’d requested andreceived from Kevin, and I’m still examining the hints of hope in my own lifeand faith journey. I have a strongfeeling it will play an important part in the theme of the spiritual memoir I’mworking on about how God brought Kevin and me together and has continued todraw us closer to Him.

Elect Officials withHope Kevin and I aren’t usually really inspired by politicians, for theobvious reasons, but over the holidays we met with someone who has given us a reasonto believe there is hope for some on the political scene. While he was home to visit family, we metwith a friend from J. R. Tucker High School who is running for Mayor of Orlando, Florida. I hadn’t known Mike Cantone all that well in highschool, though we did work on the Gavel newspaper staff together. We’d been in touch a bit more frequently overFacebook ever since he asked me to pray for his mom.

I don’t think Kevinand I had ever heard someone speak so passionately and genuinely about helpingthe poor (outside of a church or ministry setting) as we did the evening we metwith Mike Cantone. I had no idea how bad the poverty is inOrlando, and I certainly had no clue that the current mayor has made it illegalto feed the hungry in public parks before we spoke with him. More than anything else, Kevin and I havefound hope that Mike Cantone hasseen fit to enter this race clear that the social injustices in Orlando need tobe fixed and that, grounded in a strong Catholic faith and a solid track recordof subsequent outreach efforts, he is obligated to try to turn thingsaround.

Lord, help us each to listen to Your still,small voice as we discern how it is You would like us to serve those in ourlives. Amen.

The Epiphany and Total Consecration Connection

Because Kevin wasdriving, we only got a little turned around on the way to the Cursillo Epiphany party at St. Gabriel’sChurch last Friday evening, instead of completely lost as we would have been ifI’d been driving (I’m exceptionally good at getting undeniably lost) or if Johnhad gone on his own (he thought it was at St. Edward’s). At least we didn’t stop and ask some crazycontrol freak for directions on the way like the three wise men.

Anyway, I’d beenlooking forward to the party for a while, eager to see members of our Cursillo family that we hadn’t caught upwith in too long. It was no surprisethat Faith and Rob Grubbs did a wonderful job hosting the event.

There was plentyof food, as is traditionally the case with Cursilloevents. A friend of ours was told thatthere wouldn’t be much to eat when he made his weekend a number of years ago,so he packed a whole suitcase with snacks and things, only to find out that hissponsor had been kidding. If you gohungry on a weekend, it’s your choice—never a lack of food—that’s the culprit.

It was wonderfulto be greeted with lots of hugs and smiles. The joy-filled fellowship began as soon as we walked in the door andlasted the entire evening.

I was veryexcited I’d remembered to bring the remaining TotalConsecration packets that had been on a bookshelf at our apartment. They weren’t doing anyone any good on ourshelf at home. I’d given a number ofthem to family, friends, the gentlemen on a discernment vocations retreat, myChrist Renews His Parish sisters, etc., but many still remained.

Once Faith goteveryone’s attention and led us in saying grace, I got to say a word about thePreparation for Total Consecration. I invited everyone present to take one with them.

There were onlyfour packets left when we were ready to head back over the river and through thewoods to go home, and Faith had said she’d take any remaining ones to herprayer group. I was ecstatic to havebeen able to share a gift that, for countless people around the world and overthe years, has brought them to another level of faith and devotion.

Third Time's the Charm?

“I hope I don’tsee you soon,” I said, heading out the door. “Happy new year!”

It doesn’t seemlike a very nice thing to say, but under the circumstances it was thetruth. Around Dec. 17^th Ibegan experiencing problems with my cell phone. When I slid out the keyboard, the screen would go blank. I couldn’t see what I was typing when thekeyboard was out, but the rest of the phone worked normally, so I dealt withit.

In the next coupledays, my screen decided to stay white and blank all the time. And because it wasn’t supposed to be blank,there was no short little message indicating “This Screen Left IntentionallyBlank.” I always find that message amusingas it makes the screen, card, or paper no longer blank when it’s on there. I could still make calls and text, but Icouldn’t see anything on the screen, so I was limited to those people whosenumbers I know or whose place on my list of contacts I could remember.

A Delayed Reaction

My husband and Iwent to the Verizon store before Christmas, and they suggested I just upgrademy phone since we were eligible and it wasn’t likely my phone could easily befixed. I got the newer version of thephone I had. The salesman added mycontacts to the new phone, and I got a new car charger. The one I had before would have worked if ithadn’t somehow gotten bent. Yes, thereis a pattern here: cell phones, accessories, and I don’t always work welltogether.

I thought thesurreal screensaver on the new phone was kind of cool, and it was nice to havea screen that worked. A few days ofusing the phone, though, and I got a little frustrated. When I pushed a button, it would takeliterally 5-7 seconds before the phone would respond. Holy delayed reaction, Batman! It was a minor inconvenience most of thetime, but a real project when I tried to text someone quickly.

It Could Be Worse

Now mind you,this has been in no way as bad as the cell phones and mobile service throughT-Mobile that my mom and sister have. Theirissues have been significantly worse. Mymom texts Theresa, and it will sometimes take 8 hours for the text to show upon my sister’s phone. As you canimagine, it is more than just a tad inconvenient that it would literally takeabout as much time to drive all the way up to Ohio, roughly an eight hour tripfrom here, and talk with my sister in person rather than text her.

One of the mostextreme signs of needing to get a new cell phone and new service

occurred whilemy sister was home for Christmas break. Her friends had texted and hadn’t heard from her. It was the middle of the night, and shewasn’t at their place where she’d planned to be, and no one could reach her, sothey called my mom who got in her car and was driving around the city lookingfor Theresa. She was fine, thank God,but she hadn’t gotten anyone’s messages or calls, so she didn’t know they wereworried.

Knowing full wellthat my cell phone woes weren’t nearly as severe as those my mom and sisterhave had, I still thought it would be nice to text a quick response to someone,so I went back to the Verizon store last week. The salesman was kind and, as usual, baffled as to why my phone had sucha delayed reaction to anything I typed in. He replaced it with a new model of the same phone, transferred mycontacts, and I was on my way.

“You can’t hear menow?!”

This week, myscreen works, I can text without a problem, but no one can hear me very wellwhen I talk on this phone. Everyone saysI sound fuzzy. I thought maybe it wasjust a fluke, an isolated incident, but no. Each person I’ve spoken with has said they can barely hear me, so I wentback to the Verizon store again today, and explained the ongoing saga of mycell phone trauma to yet another sales clerk.

He suggested Iget a different model of phone, which I agreed to doing. He transferred my contacts, logged the latestissues into their database, and gave me a new phone which so far has a coolscreensaver, a screen that works, a reasonable response time for typed incommands, and people can actually hear me when I talk on it.

I sincerely hopeI will not be seeing any of the kind salespeople at the Verizon store anytimesoon. Don’t get me wrong, they’re nicepeople and have provided good customer service, but enough is enough. My hope is that the third time’s thecharm…like with our Christmas tree fiasco this year. (I’m pretty sure family Christmas tree reject#2 is still out in my mom’s front yard if you’re interested.)

La Galette des Rois It’s a tradition in France to celebrate theFeast of the Epiphany with a galette des rois (orKings’ Cake). It is customary to place asmall trinket in the cake made of porcelain or plastic. It is said that whoever gets the trinket intheir slice gets to be queen or king for the day. While studying Abroad inParis I volunteered at a food pantry that received donations from local stores,bakeries, and such, so families in need could come through and “shop” foritems. We got in tons of leftovergalette des rois, so we were told we could bring some home if we wanted. I got sick of them pretty quickly, which didn’thappen with any other French pastry or bakery item that comes to mind.

Potty Math When I was in my senioryear of high school, I went to a woman’s house for math tutoring. Her husband was nearby watching her youngchildren, one of whom was being potty trained. One evening, we were in hysterics, because while she was tutoring me atthe dining room table, her husband was mentoring her son in the bathroom wherewe could hear both of them. As a thankyou gift, I came up with a list of “Potty Math” definitions of math terms andframed it for my tutor at the end of the school year. She hung it up in her bathroom.

Parental Advisory! Unfortunately, it is not safe to assume thatyour 6, 7…12 year old isn’t going to look up some songs on Youtube with lyricsas inappropriate as the music videos themselves. Listen carefully to the lyrics and askyourself if they’re really what you want your young ones committing to memoryat such an impressionable age. TonyKeith’s red solo cup isn’t full of Kool-Aid, it’s brimming with beer, and Ke$ha’sthe wrong kind of “fox in sox” to be showing to your toddler.

Laughter is lovely. Whenat Hollins University, I got in the habit of jotting down funny thingsprofessors or students said during class alongside my notes. One of my favorites that I wrote down duringa Southern Literature course came out when our professor was talking about FlanneryO’Connor stated that the woman “didn’t have a carnal bone in her body.”

I’ve done this other places as well, whenI’ve gone to trainings for various things or am watching a sporting event wherethe some of the comments taken out of context would be very interesting to putin a dialogue for a short story totally unrelated to athletics.

Best snippet I got today was one that madeKevin and I both laugh. The deacon endedhis homily at Mass this evening with an interesting suggestion: “Bring a torchto the manger.”

I was intrigued by thedescription of Marriage911 :How God Saved Our Marriage (and can save yours, too!). It was written by a couple that’s been marriedfor over twenty years and has seven children. I wasn’t quite sure what it was these two individuals would consider anemergency marriage situation, but I know their approach to turn everything overto God is the right one. Greg and Julie Alexanderwere living the secular American dream perfectly. They both worked hard, had very successful,lucrative jobs, were blessed to have one boy and one girl, a big house, a boat,luxury cars, and nice vacations. Theywere in the elite social circles and kept rising in the ranks. The higher they climbed in their careers thefurther they drifted from God, each other, and their children. They both concluded their unhappiness sprangfrom having married the wrong person, and they decided to get a divorce.

     They saw it as ablessing when they found out that they’re new parish priest worked for theTribunal, the office that handles annulments. They weren’t at all prepared for the three key questions the priestasked them
. They completely rocked theirworld. In seeking the answers to thesemost pertinent questions, which every married couple needs to know, theydiscovered what God’s plan is for marriage and opened themselves up to His willfor their lives.
     Greg and JulieAlexander share both sides of their story with candor, openness, and honestythat will speak to all married couples regardless of the current state of theirmarriage. They point to the mostessential element to make marriage work: putting God at the center.
     I read the Marriage911 all the way through, and now my husband and I are going through it asecond time together and discussing the questions at the end of each chapter inaddition to the big three. We both agreeit’s a remarkable story and magnificent evidence of how nothing is impossiblewith God.

Unleashing Hope

Theonly specific gifts I asked for this Christmas were three books by author KimMeeder. I was so thoroughly moved by her book Fierce Beauty that Idecided what I wanted most was to get the other books she's written. Interestinglyenough, they're all on the subject of hope, a gift from God I have more oftenhad when it comes to others, but not as much when it comes to me.

     Ihave read and very much enjoyed the first two books of the three Kevin gave mefor Christmas. I've dived into the third book Blind Hope today. Hope Rising and Bridge Called Hope are both very moving, well-writtencollections of true stories that indeed underline the power of the human spiritto rise above suffering and reach up to God and out to others. As I've beenreading these, I've been wondering and praying about what it is God would likeme to focus on this year.

     I amvery inspired by Kim Meeder, who has risen out of the ashes and become abeautiful example of how God's love, mercy, and joy can heal even the deepestwounds and most profound sorrow. She's not afraid to walk with others throughthe dark valleys whether that means standing by a person carrying a heavy crossor caring for a four-legged animal who has been used and abused. She and herhusband Troy own and operate Crystal Peaks Youth Ranch in Oregon, "anonprofit organization that rescues abused and neglected horses and pairs themwith disadvantaged children, offering the children a place of safety, peace,and hope."
     Readingher books and some others which I've enjoyed and will write about in anotherpost (or two) has gotten me wondering what God might have Kevin and I do in theway of ministry to bring others hope, peace, and a sense of God's healing love.The Lord has brought a number of people into our lives in the past severalyears who we can easily see the Presence of Christ working in and through, evenwhen they struggle to see and feel His Presence themselves. More and more, itseems that part of being there for others has involved sharing with them someof our faith journeys and what God's done in our lives that at one point intime seemed highly improbable if not impossible.
     Bybeing a loving, listening, compassionate, and prayerful presence for the peopleGod brings into our path, we have been reminded over and over again that theLord works in mysterious ways, He is still very much in the business ofmiracles, and that deeper conversion and ongoing discernment are parts of Hiswill for each one of us.
     I'dlike to ask for your prayers as Kevin and I discern how God would like us, asindividuals and as a married couple, to share His love, joy, light, peace,Truth, and encouragement with others.

Oooooh Christmas Tree! This year my mom did not havegood luck with live trees, which our family has always gotten in previous years. Her allergies acted up, so we ended up withan artificial tree by the time all was said and done. (Tree #2 is currently in my mom's front yard if anyone's interested.) The white lights came on the artificial tree and the coloredones are our traditional ones to use. Ihassled my mom, saying that she was going a bit far claiming to be allergic to twodifferent trees, so she could get an artificial one and put all of thedecorations on herself. (When we werelittle, my dad was really particular about where decorations went on the tree,how far about they should be, etc.)

Feastof the Holy Innocents I'm grateful for this informative post and the thought-provoking video included along with it. We must definitely continue praying that fearand the temptation to view others as less than we are will dissolve whenencountered with love and Truth.

Feast of the Holy Family This evening, we went to Mass at St. Benedict’swhich was nice, though the Latin singing and prayer responses seem a littlemore challenging after a long day with not quite enough sleep. There was a Baptism as well. We welcomed a baby named Claire Patricia intothe faith.

Taking the Plunge This morning Kevin and I were up at 3:00am due to gastrointestinal issues(mine) and subsequent toilet trauma (ours). You know that you’re sticking in there through the “for better or worse”part of the marriage vows when you pull up in the Lowe’s parking lot beforethey open at 6am so you can both use their bathroom and purchase an auger tofix your toilet at home.

Peace out! My sister Theresa packedup her SUV and headed back up to Ohio today. I’m interested to hear how the trip was since 1.) I’m not positive shegot her cell phone and horrible service switched 2.) I don’t know how well hernew GPS works 3.) She’s making the car trip without my mom for the first time,and 4.) they don’t have AAA in case of emergency. I know she had her iPod cranked and a friendto visit with on the ride up, so even if they got terribly lost and broke down,at least they’d still be entertained.

Best gift from 2011! Myhusband was inspired to start going to daily Mass with me at the beginning oflast Lent, and he hasn’t stopped. He even came with me when we were on vacation this summer!Thisis truly the best gift of the year to me, the gift that is most dear to me, onethat I never thought would happen, and pure proof that nothing is impossiblewith God!

We wait in long lines to takeadvantage of a slew of sales, mail packages, purchase Christmas gifts, visitSanta, buy ingredients for holiday meals, and baking festive goodies…

Christmastree down in record time! As some of you may recall, it was onlylast Thursday that my family gathered at my mom’s house to decorate theChristmas tree. Mom was concerned mysister Mary and I wouldn’t be happy that she and Theresa had gotten a differenttype of tree from the live ones we usually buy, but we were fine with it. The tree looked pretty, as ours always havein previous years.

It turned out Momwas the only one who had trouble with the tree. She’s apparently really allergic to Scotch Pines, so Wednesday night wehad the second quickest ornament and tree removal ever for our family. As misfortune would seem her lot, my momexchanged the Scotch Pine for another tree at the lot, put it in the stand lastnight, and by 1:00am, was having trouble breathing, so she threw a coat on overher pajamas and dragged the thing out the door. (Today she got an artificial tree, which we wouldconsider almost sacrilegious if my poor Mom weren’t so allergic to all of thelive ones she’s come across this year, at least from the lot where we usuallyget them.)

Breaking tradition the hard way. These are some Christmas traditions my sistersand I really enjoy: listening to Christmas music as early as my mom canget away with pulling it out, decorating the family tree, watching a certain line-up ofChristmas movies, and making and decorating Christmascookies. Last Advent was certainly a change from the usual, with somenice added blessings.

Triage for our ChristmasCard List In the event that you didn’t receive a Christmas card from Kevin and methis year, rejoice and be glad! No,really. I’ve decided this year toconcentrate my card writing/mailing efforts first and foremost on family andfriends of ours who 1.) are currently in the hospital 2.) were just releasedfrom the hospital after major surgery 3.) are serving in the US militaryoverseas, and/or 4.) have lost a loved one in the past six months.

One reason for this is that Iwrite a personal note on each card I send, so it takes much longer than thesign and stamp kind. Since we have anumber of loved ones who fit into one of the above categories, I’mconcentrating my energy on prayers, phone calls, and notes of encouragement forthem. Please don’t be offended. I assure you we’re keeping you inprayer. Thanks to all of you who havefilled our mailbox with love, adorable photos, and kind cards!

It’s Showtime! Though this year, Kevin and I both missed out on the Christmasshow at Little Sisters of the Poor where my grandma lives, we have fond memories from whenwe’ve attended in the past. Actually, I can stillremember the Christmas concert we did when I was in second grade, and we worethese tall cone-shaped Christmas tree hats and sang a song with the lyrics: “I’mgonna be Santa’s tree, so looky, looky, looky at me!”

Jesus Christ iscoming to town! The theme of thisyear’s Glorious Christmas Nights showput on by the West End Assemblyof God was Hold on to Hope. Kevin wasn’t feeling well, somy mom, John, and I were the ones who went to the show this go round. As always, it was truly entertaining, greatwriting, funny, heartwarming, thought-provoking, and awe-inspiring!

I laughed uproariouslyduring the modern part where they sang and danced to 70s disco music rewrittenwith Christian lyrics, and I was very amused by the Bethlehem shepherds’ musicalnumber about how they hate sheep. I love how they combine Christmases presentwith a flashback to the first Christmas, and then the spectacular finale of Christ’sSecond Coming. Of course, theirperformance of TheMidnight Cry (always gives me chills-especially hearing so many hundreds ofpeople singing it in person) is always one of my favorites.

I saw on a church messageboard: “Mary wrapped the first Christmas present.” Indeed she did! As you reflect on how small things done with great love can make a huge difference in someone's day, enjoy thisvideo which is a great, powerful reminder that love and compassion are far morepowerful than lots of money in makinga difference in someone’s life.

Excellent Advent Advice Part VII: Wait Patiently

     What are we really waitingfor this week, this month, this year?
     Around the holidays, we areoften made to wait. We wait in longlines to take advantage of a slew of sales, mail packages, purchase Christmasgifts, visit Santa, buy ingredients for holiday meals, and baking festivegoodies. I saw a number of people at themall yesterday waiting for other people who were trying on clothes, shopping inyet another store, playing in the children’s play area, eating lunch, ringingpeople up in the check-out line, counting the minutes until they could go onbreak or just go home…
     I know others who arewaiting to be discharged from ICU, waiting for their deployment to end, waitingfor grieving the loss of their loved ones to become easier, waiting for afamily member’s conversion, waiting for a new job, waiting for a clearer answerfrom God as to what life-long vocation He’s calling them to, waiting forretirement, waiting to give birth, waiting for the pain to stop, waiting for anapology, waiting to hear I love you…
     We are willing to wait thelongest for whom and for what we yearn the most. Are we waiting for our relationships toimprove with our family? Our friends? Our Lord?
     You’ve likely heard aboutthe SecretSantas who have waited in line to pay off part or almost all of the bill foritems people have put on layaway at Kmart. Waiting in line to pay someone else’s bill is certainly a charitablegift. I imagine the individuals doingthis aren’t exactly pushing and shoving to get up front, which is also atestimony to the beneficence at the root of this gesture.
     Can the deepest longing ofour hearts be fulfilled by something from a store? No. The love we long for, the love that we need, only comes from the Lord. He often works in and through other people toshare His unconditional love for us, but He is the True Source of all love,mercy, peace, joy, gentleness, compassion, and kindness.
     Our dear brother in Christ sentme a link to the song “Where’sthe Line to See Jesus?” by Becky Kelley. It’s a thought-provoking video I listened to and watched a few timesthrough.
     I had to ask myself who’sline am I in, anyway? Would I be moreinclined to wait in line for hours if that’s what it took to get the gift aloved one wanted most? Would I wait aslong as need be for the gift each heart yearns for most?
    The most important,life-changing line my husband and I stand in several times a week, is the lineto receive the True Presence of our Lord in flesh and blood in the Most HolyEucharist.
     For whom or what are youwaiting?    Will your mind, body, andspirit be fed? Will you be given the gifts of truepeace and joy in time and eternity? Ifnot, there’s still time to get in the right line.

The Freedom to Refuse Love

I am often reminded that God gives us the freedom torefuse love when I spend time with my family. Over the years, there have been times when Ihave hardened my heart to family members whose own pain and insecurities atdifferent periods mirrored those I kept deeply hidden in order to cope.

     To those whom Ikept at a distance, it probably seemed that I was judging them. Sometimes that’s precisely what I was doing,being hyper-critical of others as well as of myself. Other times, the true motivation was hiddeneven from me. In order to continueputting one foot in front of the other when I believed so many lies aboutmyself, God, and others, I’d push people away.
     Anyone who madeit virtually impossible for me to remain undisturbed, especially emotionally orspiritually, I attempted to keep from getting too close. I didn’t want to have the pain and hurt I wasfeeling be triggered or exposed by what they were going through. I also feared what might happen if I washonest about what I was thinking and feeling.
Harsh criticism, judgment, and subsequent rejection were/are a few of mymost prominent fears.
     I offer myfeelings of rejection, humiliation, and inadequacy to Christ on the cross. He alone understands the depth of the paineach one of us has gone through. He’sthe only one who hasn’t walked away for a time or forever when we have beennearly consumed by suffering in mind, body, and/or spirit. As hurtful as it is to find out that thehomemade gift I spent days working on is in the back of a closet or that theletter that I spent hours composing carefully and prayerfully was never evenopened, I know the rejection of God’s unconditional love has to be the mostexcruciating. Nothing I’ve said,written, made, done, or could do would ever match or even begin to express themagnitude of love God has for each one of us.
     His gifts ofunlimited love and true sacrifice through the Incarnation of Jesus Christ, Hislife, Passion, Crucifixion, and Resurrection are the only unblemished offeringsthat exhibit the virtues of selflessness and charity, mercy and forgiveness attheir best. I find myself wanting morethan anything else to be able to love others as God loves us, at the same timethat I see how each and every one of my attempts has and will fall short.
     The best I canever do is to accept God’s love for me, so I am able to pass it on to others. This has been one of my greatest stumblingblocks. I can so easily see and evenfeel the love God has for others. Ioften have no trouble at all sensing that the Lord is at work in and throughothers.
     Though I’mundoubtedly still my own harshest critic, I have had quite a bit of feedbackover the years about who I am, what I say, write, do, stand for, etc. from myfamily members. I’m most definitelyguilty of spending more time judging people than loving them, myself included,so it’s not a huge surprise that same tendency is true of others close tome.
      I sometimes feel a bit uneasy when I gettogether with relatives, as their criticism of me seems to be the most poignantand the most hurtful.
     A number of timesmy attempts to reach out to them have been met with silence, which can sting as much as outright rejection.
     Lord, open ourhearts to Your Love, so that it may pour forth in abundance over all thosewhose lives we touch. Give us thecourage to be vulnerable, especially when we are most likely to be rejected,keeping in mind that all love given in Your name can be used for thesalvation of souls in time and eternity. Amen.

Sunday afternoon, Kevin and I pickedup thestroller and baby toys from my mom’s house that wouldn’t fit in the car afterthe baby shower and headed to the mall. We were excited that we’d finally get to see Purity again and meetNathan (whose name means “gift from God). Mom and baby are the two we’ve been praying for since God was knittinghim in his mother’s womb. A friend of afriend asked if he could give Purity my contact information last Spring. Of course, I said yes.

     This took place during theSpring 40 Days for Life campaign atwhich time my mom prayed that each woman facing an unexpected pregnancy wouldhave anotherwoman to walk alongside her. In someways, I’ve been given the opportunity to be oneof the women who’s walked alongside Purity.
     Nathan’s absolutelyprecious! He’s not even two months oldyet. There are few things better thanholding a little baby, but cradling a tiny baby boy at Christmastime ispositively priceless!
     Purity, her friend Kandie,her boyfriend, and another friend’s 3-year-old son Liam came to Richmond for avisit. We gathered at the food court toshare a meal and visit for a while.
     John jogged over from hisapartment (literally), and his mom Cathy drove over to join us for a bit. Bothof them took turns holding Nathan.
     I held the little snugglebugfor a while, then I took Liam over to play in the children’s area which wascrawling with kids. He had a blastrunning laps, jumping up on things, sliding, dropping, and rolling.
     I marveled at how Purity andher friends who are also from Kenya really are family to one another. (She has no biological family in thiscountry.) Their friend Rahab had to workthe night before and that day, so they’d brought her son Liam with them. I remarked to Kevin later how they wereliving out the idea that ittakes a village to raise a child.

     Kevin and I went to 5:30pmMass at St. Michael the Archangel, and got to take part in the homily Fr. DanBrady gave. He used a phrase from theGospel as a refrain in his sermon which he asked us to chime in with atdifferent times. It was a good exerciseto practice saying and really meaning, “Iam the servant of the Lord.”
     Both Mary and her elderlycousin Elizabeth did this when they were faced with unplanned pregnancies. They didn’t argue that the timing wasn’tright or opt out of doing God’s will because of what the situation might looklike to outsiders. They accepted theirrole as tabernacles of the Most High, and by their actions and wordsproclaimed, “Iam the servant of the Lord.”
     When I was holding Vivi atMass, helping to keep her cousin Lauren occupied, and smiling at Katelyn downthe row, Kevin whispered to me, “welcome to the village,” reminding me that heand I are both a part of children’s lives, open to loving them as if they wereour own.

     Later that night, James, whofirst connected Purity and me, had the gang over to their place fordinner. I stopped by later on to bringsome gifts for Nathan and hang out for a while. Almost the entire time I was there, Nathan was on his back fastasleep. He looked so cute wearing hislittle sweat suit and matching mittens.
     Liam was still bouncing offthe walls, getting into anything he could. We took turns attempting to channel his abundance of energy into indoorappropriate use of toys while we visited some more, talked about possible plansfor the future, and figured out the riddles James was keen to share withus.

     Lord, thank You for calling each of us tobe Your servants. Please help us toabandon ourselves to Your will as Jesus Christ, Mary, and Elizabeth and so many others across the ages. Amen.

Excellent Advent Advice Part VI: Give the Gift of Quality Time

I have found the gift I treasure most is that of quality time withloved ones. Add some yummy food, and theexperience is downright delightful regardless of the weather! I’ve been very blessed to have several familyand friends who have given the gift of their time to Kevin and me this holidayseason.

It’s Gettin’ Real in the Kroger Café

Wednesday evening afterdaily Mass at St. Benedict’s, Kevin, Gabriella, Michele, and I went to Krogerfor dinner. We ended up eating there,then talking for close to three hours. We discussed a variety of things, much of it involving faith,discernment, vocations, and using the talents God’s given us. At times our conversation was pretty serious andrather intense even to observers. “Whatis this, Vatican III?!” the man seated at the table next to us asked.
“Depends. Did you learnanything? If so, then yes!” my dearhusband responded.

Sisters, Sisters

Thursday morning, Theresacame and got me so we could go out to breakfast, just the two of us, and have sometime to catch up. Since she’s been evenbusier than usual this past semester, I only heard from her a couple times, soit was nice to hear about what life’s been like as she’s been studying,dancing, rehearsing, working, and having some interesting adventures in andaround her apartment. We made a quickTarget run, so she could get some supplies for the Christmas gifts she plannedto make. (In case you’re wondering, yes,it’s still hard to believe my baby sister’s 20 years old!)

Tradition Time with the Family

Last Thursday evening, mymom made her famous
chicken fingers, mashed potatoes, crescent rolls, and steamedveggies dinner for our family. She andTheresa had picked out the live Christmas tree, put it in the stand, and strungthe lights. The carols wereplaying. The scent of fresh-bakedbrownies lingered in the air. Mom,Theresa, Mary, Jordan, Kevin, and I gathered around the dining room table for adelicious meal, then we made our way into the living room to decorate thetree. As has been our tradition for aslong as I can remember, we have put the ornaments on first that we’ve made, orthose that have special memories or sentiments that go along with them.

Me and the Boys

Friday Kevin, John, ourfriend Chris, and I had dinner and some really deep conversation atPanera. It was one of those eveningsthat we could just feel the Holy Spirit at work in and through the peoplebefore us, well aware that God has seen fit to bring us together as part of howHe intends to draw each one of us closer to Him, give us hope for the journey,and inspiration to persevere.

Spiritual Diva Brunch

Saturdaymorning my dear Cursillo sister/spiritual diva from group reunion Christineinvited us over to her house for brunch. All of her Christmas decorations wereup, and the dining room table was set for a festive holiday breakfast. I hadn’t seen Christine, Barb, or Sandy infar too long. It was so nice to share ameal and hear about what’s been going on in their lives. Not all group members were able to attend,but they were all there with us in spirit and have definitely remained in ourhearts and prayers. (We missed you Sharon, Candy, and Sharyn!)

Our Brother from Another Mother

Saturday evening our dear brother John hadus over for homemade chili. We arrivedin time to help sauté the green pepper and onions, stir in the beans, and mixall the ingredients together in one big pot. We listened to Christmas music and talked awhile both before and afterpartaking in the chili. We bundled up,and John took us for a ride to see a few of the more elaborate Christmas treelight displays. One of family has beendecorating their home and yard for the past 37 years! Yes, of course, they’re on the Tacky Lights Tour!We warmed back up with some hot tea and scrumptious baked goods.

ThanksgivingRedo As some of you may recall, Kevin and I managed to miss not one,not two, but three different Thanksgiving dinners this year because we weresick. We have some wonderful friends whodidn’t get to celebrate Turkey Day together with the traditional fare. Laura and her husband Jeff hosted aThanksgiving dinner at their home this past Monday evening that was absolutelydelicious, positively delightful, and at times, downright hilarious. Okay, so the food was delectable, but thecompany made for some unbridled laughter. Thanks, God, for friends who have become family!

Music, Signs, and Saying Goodbye Wednesday morning, Itook Vivi to the daycare where Laura, a friend of mine I first met when I wasin fifth grade at St. Mary School many years ago who now goes to the sameparish we attend, works so we could watch her last concert with the kids therebefore she moves on to other pursuits. She was fighting back tears as she said goodbye to her students andtheir parents. hough we had toslip out before we got to give her a hug, she stopped by on her way home to letus know how much our presence had meant to her. She said she also really appreciated that I understand how difficultgoodbyes can be, especially when they involve children you’ve come to care fordeeply.
This is an excerpt from Laura’s FB status thatevening: “… I was reminded recently…that teachingis so very personal. I am thevessel to inspire thinking and learning and questions. I offer myself to mykids. Regardless of their age or the material we are exploring together, it isa personal journey. And I find that the more vulnerable, honest and present Iam, the more I risk embarrassment... the more memorable and successful thelearning.”

To Listen and Be Someonewho understands… The gifts of active listening, genuine concern, and truecompassion are some of the most valuable ones we can offer one another. I have a hard time describing how loved Ifeel when someone cares enough to listen to what I’m thinking and feeling, asksquestions, clarifies, and shows that they want to walk with me even when myjourney is leading me through a dark valley or a foggy forest. Lord, help us to be better listeners, so thatYou are able to work in and through us to love others and bring forth the lightand hope of Your Presence within them.

Santa Claus Is Comingto Town? Upon closerexamination, this seemingly inane song, sounds rather creepy. Do we really want kids thinking that somestalker Santa is watching their every move? Does it make sense to make a biggerdeal over having our kids go sit on some stranger’s lap and tell him what wewant for Christmas than to marvel at the circumstances and love implied byChrist’s birth? Yikes, let’s hope not!

Interestinglyenough, I spent many years thinking of God as more of a harsh judge or stalkerSanta making a list of everything I did wrong. I’m grateful that our God is a just God, but also the One who is loveand mercy itself. If someone’s going towatch my every move, then I’d prefer it be someone who loves meunconditionally.

O Christmas Tree, O Christmas Tree! Lastnight, we gathered at my mom’s house to enjoy one of our favorite home-cooked meals as a family, then decorate the Christmas tree. This year Mom and Theresa were the only oneswho went to get the tree. Yet again, wehave a really nice live tree decorated with little colored lights. With Christmas music playing and whilesipping on cups of hot tea, we began pulling out the ornaments from a number ofboxes. Our favorites to put on the treeare those we’ve made over the years, store bought ones that we’ve hung on ourtree since we were little, and those with a certain sentimental value. Mom brought out a few of the Christmas photocollages she’d made a while back. Forme, seeing the pictures surfaced some of the more difficult memories I have fromChristmas past. Suffice it to say thatwe rarely, if ever, had a Hallmark holiday. Our family’s been through quite a lot over the years, yet some of our mosttreasured traditions have remained the same.

     Being around children hashelped me learn to rejoice and be glad in a variety of circumstances. They’re enthralled by so many differentthings that we just take for granted, never notice, or find to be rather dull. They take great delight in hearing their favoritestory books read to them over and over and over again. Peek-a-boo and hide-and-seek are occasionsfor great bouts of giggling.
     I can still picture mysister Theresa having a ball with some of the paper strips that had been usedas cushioning around a Christmas gift. As a baby she’d wave the paper around wildly with a huge smile on herface. I imagine I had the same sort ofjubilation when I discovered that in the bottom drawer of my nursery, my momkept wrapping paper. My inclination todip into that drawer for amusement earned me another nickname: “the papermonster.”

Our Lady of Guadalupe, Pray for Us

When I waslittle, my mom and grandmother made a pilgrimage to Mexico City to see where the Blessed Mother had appearedto Juan Diego. Appearing as a youngIndian maiden and speaking in his native tongue, Our Lady asked Juan Diego to goto entreat the bishop to build a church on the hill at Tepeyac. When the bishop wouldn’t heed this requestand instead asked for a sign that the apparitions were true, the Mother of Godinstructed Juan Diego to gather the roses growing on the hill, though it was themiddle of winter and snow covered the ground, and take them to the bishop. Juan Diego did as he was told, and when heopened his tilma, letting the roses fall out, they saw a full-color image of OurLady.

     Our family livedin Rowlett, Texas at the time my mom and grandma took that pilgrimage. I can still remember being in my parents’bedroom when my mom was packing her suitcase. I really wanted her to take me with them, so I put my slippers in hersuitcase, thinking she’d have to bring me along if they were packed. Each time I’d put them in while she went tothe closet or dresser to get other clothes, she’d come back and with a laughtake them out of her suitcase and put them beside it.
     Of course, I didn’tget to go on the trip with them, but I am still benefitting from the prayersthey prayed there, and I wear a gold crossthey found on their trip every day.
Whenthey were in Mexico, they purchased thisunusual gold cross, and after returning to the United States and not beingable to find anything like it, they had another one made so my mom andgrandmother could each have one. When I turnedeighteen, my mom presented me with a goldcross she’d had made for me that was just like theirs. I have worn the cross for years and treasureit as a symbol of the rich Catholic faith handed onto me by my parents and myvery devout grandmothers. Devotionto the Blessed Mother has indeed been a very strong family tradition.
     I am absolutelycertain that praying the Rosary and ThePrayer to Mary for the Conversion of a Loved One which I found in this bookare two of the very powerful forms of intercession the Holy Spirit inspired meto turn to often when I sought to open Kevin’s heart and mind to the richnessand Truth of the Catholic faith.
     More recently,our beloved brother in Christ John introduced my husband and meyh to abeautiful reminder of Mary’s love which he keeps hanging up at work. This is a message Juan Diego received fromthe Blessed Mother that is meant for us, too:
     "Hear and let it penetrateyour hearts, my dear little ones. Let nothing discourage you, nothing depressyou; let nothing alter your heart or your countenance. Do not fear vexation,anxiety or pain. Am I not here, your Mother? Are you not in the folds of mymantle, in the crossing of my arms? Is there anything else that you need?"
     Our Lady of Guadalupe,pray for us.

Barbiesand Superheroes I was touched andamused reading this article “Justa Dad Playing Hero” by Matthew Archbold. It's wonderful the things that parents will do to entertain and playwith their children. Of course thisincludes playing Barbies, superheroes, and such. Actually, I don't think my dad ever playedBarbies with us. He much preferred totake us to the playground, read us books, or build blocks to helping us wrestleridiculous outfits onto disproportionate plastic figures. Without a sense of humor, playfulness,flexibility, imagination, and willingness to go with the flow, taking care ofchildren wouldn't be nearly as much fun!

Her story isfurther proof God never gives up on us or stops seeking to have a relationshipwith us that allows us to walk in the Truth…

PartIV: Celebratethe Season …The house was so warm and inviting. Christmas music was playing. I could smell the soup cooking in thekitchen. Each time the door opened,another one of our CRHP sisters entered and made her rounds to greet everyonewith smiles and hugs…

I’m Not Worthy to Have You EnterUnder My Roof Hearing this Gospel story in light of thisbeing part of our new response in the Eucharistic prayers has helped remind meof the importance of humility as well as confidence in God. Years ago, a friend from my Cursillo groupreunion sent me a card that had the Scripture passage on it where the friendsof a man who is sick remove the roof tiles of a house where Jesus is healingpeople, so they can lower him down that he might be healed. I can never express adequate gratitude tothose who have done whatever it took to bring me to Christ when sufferingseemed like it would overtake me. Thanksto all of my family and friends for your love and prayers, encouragement andhope!

My Sister’s Coming Home for theHolidays! If allis going as planned, then Theresa is at present on her way home over the riverand through the woods. My mom flew up toOH to help her drive back down here for the break. I’m looking forward to seeing her and givingher hugs and kisses. Taking care of Vivihas reminded me of how absolutely precious Theresa was at the same age. Love you, Miss Reesa Lynn!

Excellent Advent Advice Part IV: Celebrate the Season

I had the luncheon with myChrist Renews His Parish (CRHP) sisters marked on my calendar since November. Arline had invited those of us who had servedon team with her back in August of 2010 to come over after Sunday Mass for alight lunch and an ornament exchange. I’dbought special clear glass ornaments, and I’d made a necklace, earrings, and abracelet out of peach translucent beads and put them in the ornament. It looked pretty and the jewelry could beworn.

     I was the first one toarrive at Arline’s house. Fortunately, Ididn’t have any trouble finding it (which is significant for someone asdirectionally challenged as I can be). Isat in my car debating whether or not my melancholy mood would make it betterfor me to turn around and go home. WhenArline pulled in the driveway and saw me sitting there, I knew I’d have to atleast go in, deliver the peppermint mocha cookies Kevin had made for me tobring, and put the ornament I’d made under the tree.
     I sat out there for a bitlonger before deciding to stick around for the festivities. I’m so glad I did. Arline had decorated their house beautifullyfor the holidays, right down to the ceramic nativity set she made a while backin a class she took. The house was sowarm and inviting. Christmas music wasplaying. I could smell the soup cookingin the kitchen. Each time the dooropened, another one of our CRHP sisters entered and made her rounds to greeteveryone with smiles and hugs.
     We enjoyed a delicious mealof vegetable soup and salad while catching up with each other. It was so nice to have a home-cooked meal andbe surrounded by loved ones who were genuinely
glad to see us and hear howthings have been going.
     Arline shared some passagesfrom a book she’s loved by Matthew Kelly called Rediscovering Advent. Shegave each of us a handout with some of the quotes from the book and a fewreflection questions included for each week of Advent. We discussed our experiences of Advent inyear’s past, then we moved on to the ornament exchange. I received a beautiful one of the BlessedVirgin holding baby Jesus that was painted from the inside. I’m looking forward to putting it on thelittle tree our brother in Christ got us last year.

Excellent Advent Advice Part III: Hold on to Hope

Last Friday, Kevin and Iwent to the Ultreya held at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Richmond to reconnectwith our Cursillo family, support the person giving the witness talk, who wasmy awesome Team Member at Table (TMAT) when I made my weekend back in June 2006at Mary Mother of the Church Abbey, and see one of the spiritual divas from mygroup reunion who was going to be helping with the music for the evening.

Though I had gotten to knowthe witness to some extent in my years involved in the Cursillo movement,nothing could have prepared me for her witness talk. This strong woman shared openly about a timein her life when the darkness had descended, depression had settled in, andliving the lie that everything’s fine became the rule instead of theexception.

I’m still utterly amazedthat she made it through such a difficult period while hiding some very painfulsecrets by holding on to a pinpoint of light and hope. Her story is further proof God never gives upon us or stops seeking to have a relationship with us that allows us to walk inthe Truth. Others who have known this personlonger and gotten to know her better were also surprised at the depth of thetrauma she and her family had suffered.

The very powerfulexperience Friday evening definitely fit my description of Ultreya and whatthey’ve meant to Kevin and me over the years. The term Ultreya comes from aSpanish word meaning onward and suggests the purpose of these gatherings, whichis to help us persevere and get encouragement for our spiritual journey.

To me, an Ultreya is a mini retreat and Cursillo family reunion allrolled into one. It’s a time when yourfellow Babe Chicks, your spouse, your sponsors, and the many people who madeyour weekend possible and prayer-filled gather with many other Cursillistas forScripture reflection, prayer, spiritual growth, fun, fellowship, and food.

When I served on my firstCursillo team for the Women’s Weekend in October 2009 when our theme was“Harvesting God’s Abundance,” I gave the talk on the weekend about Ultreya, theFriday evening gatherings usually held the 1^st and 3^rdFridays of the month at local parishes. Already known in the community as a spiritual diva, I decided to end mytalk with an Ultreya version of this popular TV show theme song. I called it Cheers for Ultreya, and it fitperfectly. Actually the witness and someother Cursillistas linked arms and sang it with me after the Ultreya held atSacred Heart a few years ago.

Excellent Advent Advice Part II: Seek Him Who Seeks You

Yesterday’s Gospel readingwas about the Lord as a Good Shepherd, who goes after the lost sheep. It’s comforting to know that Our GoodShepherd seeks us out when we stray, get lost, or focus on presumably greenerpastures instead of keeping our eyes on Him.

     So often, we think of itbeing our responsibility to seek theLord, spend time learning about Jesus Christ, and communing with the HolyTrinity in prayer. When we consider thatwe are so loved and precious to the Lord that He seeks us out, draws us closerto Him, and creates opportunities for us to know Him better, it’sreassuring. It is also a source ofconsolation for us regarding our loved ones who have strayed from the love ofthe Lord. They may be looking for love,satisfaction, and happiness in all the wrong places, but the Good Shepherd isn’tthrowing in His staff and calling it quits because some of us in the flockwander off, not just from time-to-time, but every day.
     A close friend once felt very sad afterhaving turned away from the Lord. Ireminded this person that, though he might sometimes turn his back on God, thatthe Jesus Christ has kept pursuing Him. I told him it was never too late to turn around and back that thangup.
     Lately when I’ve had sometime before work or having to be somewhere, I’ll stop into a church or a chapelto pray before the Blessed Sacrament. Ofcourse God and His Creation are all around us, but somehow there’s a morepowerful experience of His True Presence in the Eucharist. Even if we go from church to church, God isthere waiting for us. He’s also in usand with us. When we slow down, we arebetter able to recognize those two facts.
    Anyone who’s spent time with young childrenknows that Peek-a-boo is a very popular game. It cracks me up every time I hear a little one dissolve into gigglesover a game of Peek-a-boo. I imaginethat Jesus exhibits the same joy and enthusiasm when we turn around andacknowledge that we’re being sought after by someone who loves usunconditionally, knows us most intimately, and desires more than anything elseto spend time with us. The Lord Jesus ispeeking out from the tabernacle, will you stop in to spend some quality timewith him?

Excellent Advent Advice Part I: Stay Awake

The Scripture readingslately have often mentioned the importance of being alert, staying awake, beingready. I find this rather ironicconsidering that this is often the time of year when people run themselvesragged doing things that they feel are part of getting ready forChristmas.

     I’m not sure how well thepeople who were out shopping at midnight the day after Thanksgiving did stayingawake and focused at the beginning of Advent last week. News stories have shown that some people certainlyweren’t seeking Christ or behaving in a Christ-like way when they sprayedpeople with pepper spray or trampled others on their way to get somedeal-of-the-century.
     On Saturday, Kevin and Iwent to 11am Mass with my grandma at Little Sisters of the Poor and couldn’thelp but be amused by the entrance song, entitled “Stay Awake.” Perhaps my grandma wouldn’t have been asinclined to doze off if we’d included the suggested clapping after each verseof the song. (By the way, neither of us think that there is anything wrong with a woman in her late eighties dozing off in her wheelchair wherever she happens to be, but we did appreciate the irony of that particular hymn choice for a nursing home.)
     Kevin and I are stillshocked that it’s December and already we’re beginning the second week ofAdvent. When people ask if we’re readyfor Christmas, we say no, and that’s okay since it’s still Advent. We need time to prepare our hearts even moreso than our homes to celebrate the Lord Jesus coming.
     What’s one thing you can dothis week to keep your heart awake to the promptings of the Holy Spirit?

Laughing Together

After several months of computer issues, thisweek, Kevin for the umpteenth time, reloaded all of our programs andtransferred the files from our external hard drive. He’d been so exasperated with all of thetechnological problems with our laptop that once he’d loaded everything, hedidn’t bother checking to see if the latest version of the spiritualautobiography of the two of us (how God brought two very opposite peopletogether and keeps us laughing) was accessible. After I came home and listened to his many frustrating attempts atresurrecting our computer, I opened a few folders and found what I’d beenlooking for. I believed Kevin when hesaid it was in the hard drive somewhere, but I wasn’t pleased when I couldn’taccess it. It’s been uncovered, and I’mback to working on it! Yippee!

No Soupfor You!

Several months ago we went to Baker’sCrust, a nearby restaurant, with John, our best friend and dear brother inChrist. We got him a bowl of Kickin’Corn and Crab Chowder to go since he’d ordered a salad for his meal and hadn’tyet tasted this amazing soup. Towardsthe end of dinner, he said something about having returned a printer to thestore. Kevin and I looked at him inutter disbelief, as earlier that week, we’d spent two hours at John’s placehelping him set up a wireless printer. With the firmness of the Soup Nazi on Seinfeld, we said, “No soup for you!” and took the bag back until he explained that it wasn’t the printer we’dspent hours fiddling with.

BirthdaySerendipity

Wednesday this week, Kevin got to St.Benedict’s before I did for daily Mass, and as is his custom, he was in thecommons talking with some of the other regulars we’ve befriendedbeforehand. He found out that it wassomeone’s birthday. Her husband had beentoo tired to go out after a long day at work, so Kevin asked me what I thoughtabout taking Janet out for dinner after Mass to celebrate. I was very touched that he’d come up withsuch a kind gesture, and the three of us ended up having a great time at Baker’sCrust. (All three of us got our ownbowls of the Kickin’ Corn and Crab Chowder!)

With One Headlight

Last night while I was working, John andKevin had another technological issue that took a couple hours to remedy. One of John’s headlights was out, and he’dtried to replace it himself earlier in the week without success. I told him Kevin would be likely to offer hiscar repair expertise if he wanted assistance, adding that he’d even talk himthrough the process over the phone if that’s what he preferred.
I can’t exactly say I’m surprised that ittook Kevin and John about two hours last night to get the headlight working, atleast some of the time. I know how inclinedKevin is to underestimate by hours or days how long it will take him to fixsomething. Considering some of the othertech support we’ve provided John over the years, you’d think one of them wouldhave thought early on that the 10-15 minutes Kevin predicted the job would takewouldn’t be anywhere close. I know Kevin’sbeen missing working on cars, motorcycles, and such with his close friends fromback in Rochester, but this seems to be going a bit far to get some guy bondingtime.

And With Your Spirit:The New Translation of the Mass

I like it! Some people have asked what I think of the new translation of the RomanMissal. I’m very moved by the fervor ofthe prayers and the lyrical language of praise. Yes, it will take some getting used to, but I don’t see that as aproblem, when it’s helping all of us to slow down and really think about whatwe’re praying.

Still in Discernment

A friend of ours recently returned fromher second stay at an abbey where she is discerning becoming a postulant. Again, in hearing about her experience andthe questions she’s pondering as she considers the consecrated religious lifeversus married life, my heart ached for her as she is very much in the throesof discernment at this point. Rereadingthe first 84 pages I have written of our spiritual memoir, I was reminded ofhow painful and trying it was for me discerning my primary vocation (afterloving and serving the Lord).
I encouraged our friend, reminding herthat she’s indeed in the best place she can be: she desires and is seeking todo the Lord’s will above all else. Thoughit’s hard to be in a waiting period with big life decisions hanging over yourhead, it changes everything to have your heart and mind set firmly on servingthe Lord. I reminded her of howessential this is and how it’s the perfect place to rest in while “living thequestions.”

     Her actions, herinsights, and her writing all show that Kim Meeder isn’t afraid to get coveredin muck if that’s what it takes to bring healing and hope to people as well asanimals who have been used, abused, and abandoned. As stated on the back cover: “Along with herhusband, Troy, she owns and operates Crystal Peaks YouthRanch in central Oregon, a nonprofit organization that rescues abused andneglected horses and pairs them with disadvantaged children, offering them aplace of safety, peace, and hope.”
     If you like truestories, deep faith, triumph over suffering, people who care about people,gorgeous descriptions of nature, outdoor exploration, animals, masterfulwriting, God, Christianity in action…then you will absolutely love Fierce Beauty!
     I’m definitelyadding Kim Meeder’s three other books—Hope Rising, Bridge Called Hope, and Blind Hope—to my wish list, and myguess is as soon as you read one of her books you’ll want to get the otherthree as well. I don’t know that I’mdaring enough for some of the extreme outdoor adventures Kim Meeder’s gone on,but I’m positive I would absolutely love to go to her ranch and meet her in herelement some day.

Whythe New Missal Will Be Good for the Mass by Fr. Robert Barron is a verybeautiful description of the reasons for the changes in the translation of theRoman Missal and examples of how much this more poetic version will add to theheartfelt prayers of the Mass. Such hugechanges can seem daunting, but I believe Fr. Barron is absolutely right: this isa richer translation of the Latin that will make us more attentive to whatwe're praying, and that the best approach is to accept this as a positivechange.

There will be no turkey. Kevin and I havemissed out on three Thanksgiving meals in the past 5 days because we've got thestupid virus going around. We had crackers and Sprite/Ginger Ale as our mainThanksgiving meal. Even with that, this still wasn't by any means at all theworst Thanksgiving I've ever had (which is a clear indication that our family has had some pretty horrendous Turkey Days over the years).

She really loves me! My mom brought me a plate ofThanksgiving leftovers for lunch today while I’m nannying. I still haven’t had turkey, since Kevin and Idon’t eat meat on Fridays, but the mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, and carrotswere yummy! What’s more, I have a sliceof Mom’s homemade apple pie waiting for me.

Take it outside. This morning after a few rounds ofscreaming, wriggling, wailing, I managed to get Vivi and her teething,congested little self dressed, so we could go outside for a bit. It’s amazing how some fresh air and sunshine,a change of scenery, and plenty to look at will change a grumpy, crabby cutieinto a serene, riding in my stroller, waving to the doggies babe.

Doublewide. That’s how we rolled. Whentaking care of my two little guys, I got in the habit of taking them on a walkin the morning. I’d put them in thedouble stroller, bring water and Cheerios or goldfish crackers, and we’d headout. I usually took them down the alleyand up a few blocks to one of the main streets. I’d point out the different animals, flowers, trees, and things we sawon the way. They got to the point wherethey’d tell me just before they could see what was next that they knew what wasright around the corner.

Bells ring! Two Songs! Before we reached the church near Hank’s street, JG wouldpoint up at the bell tower and say: “Bells ring! Two songs!” since I’d toldthem that at noon and at 6pm the bells not only ring, but they also play twosongs. That tidbit of info really stuckin the day my husband came over and we all were looking at his watch countingdown to when the bells would start to ring.

Reconnectingwith old friends. Last Wednesday, Holly, my bestfriend from high school, called and asked if I wanted to go out forlunch. We met up at Arby’s to grab abite to eat and catch up. She wished mea happy birthday, as we hadn’t seen each other since my birthday. I did the same, as I don’t think we’ve seeneach other since her birthday at the end of August. It’s nice that no matter how long you’ve beenapart and how far away you’ve lived, that you can still pick up right where youleft off. Wow! The two of us have been through quite a lottogether! Thanks God for old friends whoknow us well, and love us anyway.

The One Thing

Texts from Your Mom

What would you thinkand do if someone whose number you didn’t recognize texted

“How are you doing?”

A friend of oursresponded (as many would) with: “Who is this?”

“Your mom,” wasthe reply.

Figuring thismust be a joke from one of his friends, he played along.

When he was outon a Saturday night, he received a text from the same number: “how is your footdoing?”

“It’s turned a weird shade of green,” hetexted.

“Remember to getmore bandages.”

“I forgot to pickthem up at Walmart.” Later on, he textedsomething about not forgetting to bring the Minute Maid.

Sure, it seemedsort of strange that someone was texting him over a period of several daysasking about his foot (when he hasn’t injured it), telling him someone namedIngrid would bring things for him (when he knows no one named Ingrid), and talkingabout meeting up when the person had never given any identity clues, but again,our friend assumed it was one of his friends just playing a joke on him, so hekept playing along.

Last night, hegot a voicemail from

the person who’d been texting him. Turns out the person who’d been sending himmessages for several days really is a mom who’d thought she was texting her son. From the message, our friend could tell the woman was confused as towhat was going on judging by the strange responses she’d gotten to her sincerequestions and suggestions about her son’s injured foot.

Oops! Our friend was genuinely surprised to receivethis voicemail and wasn’t quite sure what to do about it. Clearly the woman had made a mistake. Our friend texted back “This is not who youthink it is.”

Several possiblesolutions came as to how to handle the awkward situation. “Text: ‘I’m leaving the family and moving toCali’ or ‘I’m going back to Afghanistan in the morning,’” were two of the many "helpful"suggestions offered in in jest.

Our friend’sbrother was reading over the text message exchange while we had thisbrainstorming session, and he went ahead and called thewoman. Laughing, he told her thatthere’d been a mix-up, and that she’d had the wrong number. She apologized and said something about himnot sounding like Jacob.

WARNING:If you nonchalantly text answers you’d send to a practical joking friendwithout knowing who’s actually receiving them, you risk scandalizing some poorconfused mother liable to end up in the loony bin thinking her son has lostevery last ounce of his home training.

A fewof my least favorite things. Thisweek I was reminded of what a bummer it is to take care of a little one who’sfeeling sick. Poor snuggle bug got herfirst virus this week. I was reminded tobring an extra set of clothes with me—since nannying is like a water balloonfight—you never know where or when you’re going to get hit. Wiping down furniture, carpet, toddler, andmy clothes brought back memories from similar episodes in babysitting/nannyadventures dating all the way back to eighth grade. This experience again increased my alreadyundying gratitude for my mom.

Mama said there’d be dayslike this. WhenI was little, I was in the habit of getting an ear infection and congestionthat would lead to vomiting just about every time I cut a tooth. Throwing up is hands-down one of my leastfavorite things to do. I often end uppulling muscles and feeling just as bad if not worse right afterwards. I’ve been offering this bout of nauseatedpuking misery up for those who feel nauseated most of the time due to a chronicillness, invasive treatments, and/or acute morning sickness. Lord, give them hope in the midst of theirsuffering.

Afternoons with Grandma. My mom’s mother, who’s 88, is the onlygrandparent of mine still living on earth as well as in my heart. Actually that’s been the case since I waseleven years old. She’s been the faithful,caring presence for our family during countless crises over my lifetime. Her persistent hope, consistent faith,fervent prayer, strong will to live, and determination in the midst oftremendous suffering as well as her willingness to come to fly to wherever welived at the time when my mom called for backup has taught me so much aboutwhat it means to be a Catholic woman, wife, mother, grandmother, nurse,friend… Lord, thank You for the witnessof my grandmother’s faith and devotion to caring for family.

HumanConcerns: Is anyone scared? As reflection for the Human ConcernsCore Team meeting, a woman read the homily Fr.Michael Renninger had given at our parish the weekend of August 7^th. I was very excited to hear the sermon, asthose he’s given over the years have been some of my absolute favorites! My mom had told me about the sermon since we’dhad a different priest at the Mass we’d gone to that weekend. Be not afraid to click here to readthe whole sermon.

When in Rome… do as Catholics have forcenturies: eat, pray, love, participate in the sacraments, embrace the richhistory, be part of a papal audience, enjoy time with your friends... The best indication of a great pilgrimage toItaly, a one line e-mail is the only correspondence we received: “DearTrisha and Mary and Theresa, I am having a great time and doing fine...no timefor internet chats though.”

Rollingin the Deep Sometimes when I find a songI really like I’ll play it over and over again for several days in a row. Lately this has been my first Youtube music pick. I like Adele’s rich voice, the catchy melody,and the samurai-looking dance that’s part of her video. The dance piece makes me think of some of thecontemporary and modern pieces I’ve seen at Hollins and a few of the pieces performed by my sister Theresa overthe years.

Human Concerns: Is Anyone Scared?

Last week, I had the blessing of attendingtheRed Mass, then immediately heading across town for proof positive of what I’djust heard in BishopDiLorenzo’s homily, which served as a state of the union address for the Diocese of Richmond. I hopped in the car after Mass to go to the biannualHuman Concerns Core Team meeting at our parish.

     I honestly can’t think of more inspiring,hope-filled evidence that Catholics in our Diocese are indeed in the trenchesaddressing the areas of suffering caused by our culture of death than attendingthis meeting. Each person in attendancethat evening is truly passionate about serving those in need as Christ servedothers: compassionately, selflessly, and with great love.
     Though their ministries variedconsiderably as did their particular types of involvement, one thing remainedclear: action, reflection, and transformation are powerful signs of the HolySpirit working in and through them and the many they serve whether feeding the homeless,visiting the imprisoned, praying to end abortion, doing missionary work inHaiti, standing up for persons with disabilities, or giving underprivilegedchildren a head start.
    As reflection for the meeting, Bridget readthe homily Fr.Michael Renninger had given at our parish the weekend of August 7^th.
I was very excited to hear the sermon, asthose he’s given over the years have been some of my absolute favorites! My mom had told me about the sermon since we’dhad a different priest at the Mass we’d gone to that weekend. Click here to readthe whole sermon.
     Fr. Renninger began with a list of some of themajor current problems in our culture: “Rising food prices. Unemployment. Abroken educational system. Drug abuse. Abortion. A presidentwho forced insurers to provide free birth control for everyone. Bankruptcies. Recessions.”Then he’d ask, “Is anybody scared?”
     “…Marriages that are struggling. Childrenthat have not been taught basic manners. Young adults threating suicide. Anepidemic of depression. Cancer. Disease. Addictions. People who have forgottenhow to forgive, how to treat each other with basic respect. Blaming Republicansfor everything. Blaming Democrats for everything. Blaming immigrants for everything.Blaming everyoneelse for your unhappiness.” Then he repeats: “Is anybody scared?”

Fr.Renninger points out that: “It’s OK to be afraid. But we get into trouble whenwe allow our fears to control us. So the question tonight is – how is aChristian supposed to react when our world, our lives, get messy?”

     The answer is one that Lord has remindedHis disciples of a number of times: keep your focus on Jesus. When we concentrate on the details of themess around us, we’re likely to get bogged down. When we focus on the person of Jesus Christ,we have hope, strength, endurance, joy, and peace to persevere.
     I am still amazed how perfectly Fr.Renninger’s rundown of what’s wrong in our society and how to remedy it fitswith theBishop’s Red Mass sermon. Though we’rethreatened to be overwhelmed by the evidence of the culture of death all aroundus, we keep moving forward because we are lifted up by Christ.
     I felt like celebrating at so muchconcrete evidence that Catholics in our parish are indeed in the trenches withthe poor, the voiceless, the marginalized, the traumatized, the addicted, theafflicted, and the incarcerated. We’reaccepting God’s call and the gift of His courage to stop and take care of theperson suffering rather than keep on walking, as the religious leaders in thestory of the Good Samaritan did.
     Lord, thank You for such amazing peopleYou bring into our lives to serve, show us Your Presence and what it means tobe Christ for others. Help us toremained focused on You, so that Your glory is what matters most to us in timeand eternity. Amen.

Compassion: Living in the Spirit of St. Francis

Compassion:Living in the Spirit of St. Francis is a rich, well-researched study ofthe selfless brand of agape love by which the saint from Assisi was known. I was pleasantly surprised to find some trulybeautiful excerpts from poems in addition to a number of references toreligious classics that are lovely lyrically.

It is evident thatauthor Ilia Delio, O.S.F., has captured the essence of Christ’sself-sacrificing love in her description of St. Francis life and service toothers. Thoughtful Scripture reflectionand carefully chosen passages from literature, religious classics, as well asquotes from more recent books give this work a well-rounded feel instead of themore academic one a straight biography of St. Francis would be likely tohave. Each chapter ends with ameditation and some reflection questions to help the reader examine his/herlife to gauge caring quotient and compassion reactiveness.

One of my favoritepassages

from Chapter Five, I marked and have shared with my husband and alsoread it as the closing prayer at a Human Concerns meeting. The paragraph begins with “Compassion is away of being in relationship with another that accepts the other in his or herweakness and responds to the needs of the person with mercy. In this way, compassion is Eucharistic…” (p58) The relationship between mercy,Eucharist, and compassion is powerfully made here. Next the author includes a very poignant poemby Graziano Marcheschi called Tabernacleswhich perfectly describes humility and reverence due the Blessed Sacrament…andeach person, who is made in God’s image.

At times, I was a bit thrown off by the highnumber of quotes in a book that seemed at first glance like it would be more ofa reflection than a dissertation or a research paper. However the works cited (of which there arefifteen pages at the end) certainly add to and explicate the message of mercy.

From Chapter Eight tothe end of the book, the topic seems to shift more from spirituality and howSt. Francis lived to a scientific and sociological analysis of how technologyand its implications in our current society have adversely affected people’saptitude for and tendency towards compassion. These are certainly important elements to consider since so many peopleare plugged in practically 24/7 and not spending as much face-to-face timecommunicating.

I’d definitely recommendthisbook for all Catholics, as compassion is certainly key to living aChristian life, and St. Francis modeled the virtue in very inspirational ways.

The Red Mass, Custer's Last Stand, & the Diocese of Richmond

In many ways, Bishop DiLorenzo’s sermon atthe Red Mass held at St. BenedictChurch Thursday evening, November 10, 2011, was a state of the union addressfor the Catholic Diocese of Richmond. As is histradition, Bishop DiLorenzo began his homily with a story from history. He talked about how he’d not been satisfied asa young boy when he’d read about the outcome of Custer’s Last Stand.

Lieutenant Colonel GeorgeCuster and the Seventh Calvary were sent to force the large Indian armyback to the reservations. BishopDiLorenzo talked about how Custer and the Seventh Calvary were sent into asituation they had no idea was going to overwhelm them just as the people ofthe Catholic Diocese of Richmondare sent into the culture of death, which can seem as if it will overpower usat times.

Catholics are faced with a number ofissues that could ostensibly seem as though they are too great to becombatted.

Treatment of the poor andimmigrants, widespread abortion, same-sex marriage, euthanasia, human trafficking,child abuse, pornography, the death penalty, the marginalization of personswith disabilities…are major concerns from mainstream society which we’re calledto address.

Though it seems there are enemies on everyside and the forces of darkness are looming large, we are called to go enterinto and remain in the fray. In a way,we are like the SeventhCavalry; our numbers seem small andour Biblical values unpopular, but we’re sent in to fight, and we go.

One thing that really struck me about theBishop’s sermon is that he talked about how our bishops, priests, deacons,religious, marrieds, singles…are in the trenches, hard at work fighting againstthe culture of death, and the many ways it manifests itself.

We aren’t aware of the issues and plan todo something about it in the future. Wehaven’t identified the attacks against life and stopped fighting, because wehave been defeated in some past efforts. Catholics in ourDiocese and elsewhere have put onthe armor of Christ and continue to engage in the battle to protect thesanctity and dignity of human life from conception to natural death.

Bishop DiLorenzo’s message was one of hope. We may be fighting an uphill battle, onewhere the enemies seem to outnumber us, but we are holding the position ofTruth, continuing the fight against darkness and evil, and we’re not surrendering.

Lord, please help us to continue thespiritual warfare that is necessary in order to spread the Good News, live outthe Truth, and combat the forces of darkness, evil, and sin in our society. Help us put onthe armor of Christ. Keep us focusedon You, so that we may, through prayer and action, be transformed and therebyhelp bring about the transformation of the hearts and minds of those who havesuccumbed to the culture of death. Amen.

Not Quite The Camino, but Definitely theLongest Possible Route! Kevin and I had to laugh atour silly sequence of events that morning. We’re doing the Five First Saturdays devotion,and I didn’t have the pamphlet with me that has all of the requirements in it.I joked with Kevin about the possibility of receiving an extra blessing fordoing a pilgrimage on the way to Mass on the first Saturday of the month. Wecertainly took thelongest possible route. If we’d just stayed where we were, we would havebeen early!

Lord, thank You for opening my heart andKevin’s so that we are drawn to praise You through the sacrifice of daily Mass,no matter how long it takes us to get there. Amen.

Picture this! My mom called me on Sunday eveningto come over to Planned Parenthood to take pictures of the 40 Days for LifeClosing. I grabbed our camera and headedover. I saw many people I recognizedgathered across the street from where I parked. My mom and several prayer warriors who have been involved in thecampaign for many hours and many years were standing on the sidewalk withcandles and flowers. I was the mostsurprised to see KayMarie Geiger, who I hadn’t seen since her husband JoeGeiger’s funeral the week before. Talkabout dedication! I’d considered takingpictures then, politely slipping out, as it had been a long, busy weekend, butI couldn’t bring myself to leave since Kay Marie was there.

The40 Days for Life Closing prayer at the vigil was beautiful, complete withcandles, roses, and music! ThanksValerie and Chris for putting everything together. Dinner at Baker’s Crust afterwards wasscrumptious and spiritually edifying. Whatan amazing group of people God has brought together to respect and protect thesanctity and dignity of human life from the moment of conception!
