Walk for Life

This past Saturday morning, Kevin, my mom, and I participated in the Walk for Life. I’m really excited that because of the prayers, generosity, and support of family and friends, the three of us raised over $2,300 to benefit the Pregnancy Resource Center of Metro Richmond.
The first year my family and I participated in the walk, my youngest sister Theresa was still in a stroller. This year she’s graduating from high school.
One of my favorite years at the Walk for Life was May 2006 when my dad and one of the boys I was a nanny for, joined us on the walk. The young man was just under two years old at the time and made the experience a lot of fun for our family. He was excited about everything: the balloons, being outside, seeing other kids, taking a walk, hanging out with my family…all of it!
When they began with an opening prayer, he folded his hands like his parents had taught him to do. What a cutie! He rode in his stroller for much of the walk and pointed out flowers, dogs, and other points of interest along the way. I let him walk the last block or so, then we enjoyed a picnic outside at the church hosting that year’s Walk for Life.

My dad was in his element goofing around with the young man. That day Dad was wearing a T-shirt with a wolf on the front of it, so the boy kept pointing out his wolf shirt, and from then on he would refer to my dad as “man with wolf shirt” or “wolf man,” which of course thoroughly amused my father. In the months to come, the boy referred back to that day and remembered “the wolf man” in his evening prayers with his mom and dad.
I’ve always loved children, and formed a very close bond with my two little guys as their nanny, but somehow taking care of the young man that weekend while his parents finally got a little much-needed time away, I felt my heart expand even more. Children are such wonderful blessings! I can’t imagine what my life would be like without them.
Lord, thank You for the blessing of children. What joy and love they bring into our lives, into our hearts, into our homes! Help us to cherish them as You do. Amen.
